My impression is that the 3D rendering almost as slow as without 3D acceleration, but maybe it’s just a perception That configuration will change how we draw the final contents into the window, but not how the actual graphics rendering is done.

So on your card, the rendering is still being done on your GPU with Vulkan, and then when we have to draw into the window we will use X11 for the last step usually called “Presentation”, hence the config option name. The cost is proportional to the display size and the frame rate of the workload, so how much of a performance hit that is will depend on your system and workload. On my system, I can’t tell the difference between the two paths up until my graphics workload gets too high and my host GPU gets saturated, and then my performance falls off a cliff.

So if your application has a frame-rate limiting option, you could try lowering the FPS and ironically your performance might improve. But the difference between the two paths might be greater on lower-end GPUs? Thank you for the comprehensive explanation, banackm! Thanks for this.

Running virtualized operating systems on top of existing hosts is a great idea. It’s fun, it’s cool, it allows you to experiment with software before committing to your real platform, it allows you to do things you would not normally dare, it gives you enormous flexibility, and it significantly reduces costs of deployment.

But the one thing that most virtualization software lacks is the 3D acceleration for guest operating systems. Or used to lack In this series of articles, I will show you the simple hacks required to have 3D acceleration enabled in your guest operating systems! This means that your virtual machines will not be limited to 2D applications.

Make changes to the configuration file only when the virtual machine is powered off! Open the folder containing your virtual machines and their configuration files , find the relevant. It specifies how much memory we want to dedicate to our virtual GPU.

In my example, this is 64MB. If you want to be precise, let’s say 32MB, then your calculation should be 32 x x , because 1KB is bytes. The maximum is MB. This is the third, optional line.

It disables mouse integration. Along with the third option, you should turn off motion grabbing for your virtual machines. If you’re wondering what this does, it will prevent your games from remembering the mouse motion when it leaves the virtual machine. So if you “ungrab” the mouse by moving it out of the virtual screen, let’s say, on the right side, your game won’t continue pushing to the right. In games where the mouse movement is used for map scrolling, it won’t keep your maps scrolling.

In games where the mouse movement is used for motion and targeting, like FPS, it won’t keep your character spinning around like a record. Now, who was it that sang this? Dead or Alive or Youthquake? 3D acceleration in virtual machines – Part 1: VMware & DirectX – Tutorial.Introduction

This week, and perhaps even today , Microsoft will be releasing the first official Windows 11 Insider Preview which will give us a good look at the true vision Microsoft has for the next generation of Windows.

Maybe some of you aren’t ready to surrender your main PC to the Dev channel of Windows Insiders and will instead opt to follow the test phase by using a virtual machine, which is entirely possible and probably smart if you don’t have a spare qualifying device. For those that are using Oracle VirtualBox , which is free, some people forget to install the Guest Additions, which installs drivers to make navigating inside the VM much more pleasant.

Assuming your GPU meets the criteria for Hardware 3D Acceleration in the Windows guest, and you have activated Windows, the Windows 11 leak disabled theme options until Activation you can now enable 3D acceleration. You can now power up the VM and see that the 3D acceleration is enabled. This article assumes that you already know how to use Oracle VirtualBox, but if you don’t, feel free to ask away in the comments or in our forums and we will try to help.

Please note that all the mentioned features and therefore, the solutions are currently experimental. This means that the setup might work for you – or it might not.

It also means less than perfect integration and performance. In near future, we will have perfect, full-blown 3D graphics support that we desire. For now, let’s see what we can do. I would definitely try those config options I posted. They should work even on Wayland hosts, it’ll just use Wayland’s X11 emulation layer. Anyway, I hope this issue will be fixed in the future release.

At this time maybe a downgrade to Thanks a lot, banackm! Last question from my side – “That will force us to draw the window using X11 instead of Vulkan”, does this config use OpenGL or it is a software rendering?

Turn on suggestions. Dec 31,  · Open the folder containing your virtual machines (and their configuration files), find the replace.me file and open it in a text editor. So now, we need to add a section that enables 3D acceleration. This enables the 3D acceleration. It specifies how much memory we want to dedicate to our virtual GPU. Jan 22,  · Maybe the 3D acceleration check is not yet strict at power up of the VM. If it does get strict about feature level 11_1 to have 3D acceleration for the VM some time in the future, you could try switching the VM to use GLRenderer by having these lines in the vmx configuration file. You might have to disable the Intel graphics at the Device. Enable 3D HW acceleration on VMWare Workstation 10 on Ubuntu (3 Solutions!)Helpful? Enable 3D HW acceleration on VMWare Workstation 10 on Ubuntu (3 Solutions!)Helpful? Please. Nov 11,  · Same issue here. Running Arch Linux kernel “arch”, video is “VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics (rev 07)”, Vmware Workstation ver. build The issue started after update fo There are two workarounds I’ve found so far: 1. Disable 3D acceleration in VM. 2. Sep 07,  · Select Accelerate 3D graphics. Configure the virtual machine to use only one monitor. Click OK to save your changes. Power on the virtual machine and install the required DirectX EndRuntime version.
